5 April 2013: Advertising and marketing communication graduate Ashley Reeve will soon be packing her bags for the trip, and internship, of a lifetime.

The 21-year-old has been selected for an internship working in brand and business development with the advertising firm Seventy Agency in Stockholm, Sweden.

“Sweden is home to some of the best creative agencies in the world. It was always my goal to head overseas to get international experience and to develop my skills,” Ms Reeve said.

Majoring in media arts and digital design and production, Ms Reeve said her course provided a “strong grounding and understanding of the creative processes needed to develop a successful advertisement”.

She is also grateful for the support of University staff throughout her degree, including Shaun Cheah, Joanna Henryks, Marion Hutton and Tat-ming Yu.

“I have learnt so much from the amazing tutors I have had. They brought real world experience and expertise that I really value and will keep with me for the future,” she said.

Ms Reeve was also nominated to receive the Herbert Burton Medal, which is presented to a student who has made valuable contributions to the University and excelled academically.

She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society and was asked to be a student representative on the University of Canberra Union’s (UCU) Board.

She believes the key to her success was participating in events and asking for help.

“I wanted to experience everything the University had to offer including joining societies, and having a good balance of social and sporting activities, campus life and academic study. I also asked tutors and staff for feedback and have found them very approachable and supportive.”

Last year she was elected president of the Advertising and Marketing Society where she has worked to strengthen networks between the industry and the University.

“This has been a fantastic experience for me and has helped me to grow in confidence.  I have met with and built personal relationships with industry professionals and have more in depth understanding of the industry,” she said.

Ms Reeve also undertook internships in Sydney with Clemenger BBDO and Ogilvy where she worked on brands including Foxtel, Coca-Cola and Powerade and had her ideas for Qantas pitched to clients.

“Through my internship I had the opportunity to create networks, learn more about agency roles and what qualities are important for new recruits,” she said.
Ms Reeve now aspires to become an art or creative director in an advertising agency.
