7 April 2011: The poster “Keep Calm and Carry On” became a mantra for husband and wife team Greg Carnell and Joanne Mackay, from Boorowa.
Mr Carnell, 43 and Ms Mackay, 53 enrolled in the Juris Doctor course and graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies after completing the first eight units of study.
“Greg and I were keen to study together and law seemed to be the common denominator,” Ms Mackay said.
“Law is a great subject to study and the Graduate Diploma has given us a greater appreciation of the law at work in our everyday life.”

The couple met seven years ago when Mr Carnell moved to Boorowa from Tamworth.
They married in 2008 and have five children ranging in age from 12 to 21.
Ms Mackay says commuting to Canberra three days a week for classes was a challenge but they both agreed it was worth it.
“We talked about studying for a long time. I don’t know if the timing is ever right when you are managing a busy life but we have managed to make it work, although my son Jack couldn’t believe I started University study at the same time he did!” Ms Mackay said.
Ms Mackay says it will be a very proud moment when they receive their Graduate Diplomas.
“It’s proof that it’s never too late to try something outside your comfort zone and to challenge your mind.”
“It was great to share the experience with my husband and get a different interpretation on different facts and scenarios. At times it was a real juggling act but we were encouraged by the kids to keep going,” she said.
“I learnt more than just theory. I learnt about my own capabilities but more importantly, I learnt there is a great feeling in filling your life with knowledge, surrounded by those you love.”
