13 April 2011: While most graduates are settling into their new careers, Kate Landford is busy packing her bags for the trip of a lifetime.
After completing a double degree in tourism management and international studies at the University of Canberra, Ms Landford will head to Spain in August to study a Masters in Multilingual and Bilingual Education at Universidad de Alcala in Madrid, after hearing about the program in her Spanish class.
Ms Landford says she is looking forward to challenge of living and studying abroad.
“My biggest wish is that I come back from a year immersed in the culture of Madrid, fluent in Spanish and that I can keep those language skills for the rest of my life.”

The 22-year old, from Canberra will attend classes, write a thesis and complete a paid internship teaching English at a school in Madrid.
While completing her double degree, Ms Landford travelled to Vietnam for three weeks to study the local tourism industry. She also completed an internship at the National Portrait Gallery, received numerous awards at the University and received a commendation for the 2010 Young Achiever of the Year Award.
“I’ve learnt that opportunities such as internships and real industry experience are what set you apart and make you stand out. I have no doubt that my experience travelling overseas and the industry and networking experience provided to me by the University are what helped me come this far and what has earned me my awards and Masters scholarship,” she said.
She also says studying a double degree was one of the best decisions she’s made.
“Tourism management and international studies complement each other in many ways and I found much of what I’ve learnt from one degree can apply to the other. Being able to graduate at the age of 22 with two degrees is something I am very proud of, and I would recommend a double degree to anyone.”
Ms Landford celebrated her graduation on April 1 with friends and family and heads to Spain in August.
“Classes start in September so I’m looking forward to settling in and finding all the good Tapas bars!”
