Message from the Vice Chancellor to Staff and Students - Semester 1 2005VC - Professor Roger Dean

Feb 7, 2005: Dear Students and Colleagues of the University of Canberra,

A hearty welcome to all returning staff and students, and particularly those new to the University at the start of academic year, 2005, and a wish to each of you personally that 2005 will be a year of fulfilled expectations and pride in achievements in academic and other aspects of life.

To students, I simply say that the University offers a very rich life experience with great diversity of opportunity, probably unique, for enjoyment of learning, discovery, recreation and personal growth through new friendships, new interests and new skills. It exists to make your life goals in education possible.

Always remember it is your institution of learning and somewhere close at hand there is some unit, group or individual who can and will willingly assist you with any problem or concern. So I invite you all, indeed I urge you starting today, to participate as fully as possible in university life and friendships, study hard, interact, have fun and grow together to greater fulfilment.

To my colleagues, I would share this thought with gratitude, that we are the privileged successors to an exciting, innovative institution with a supportive, harmonious environment and justifiable pride in the creative efforts and dedication of our predecessors and our colleagues.

This is an ideal time to remind ourselves of the invaluable growth in culture that has been achieved by hard work even in the past few years, and to resolve to keep thinking, debating and working hard in order to maintain the momentum for improvement, including advancing in ways possibly not yet known to us.

Best regards

Roger Dean, Vice-Chancellor
