Warm welcome back to campus for world-class athletes

11 April 2006: The University welcomed its elite athletes home from the Commonwealth Games last week with a celebration lunch.

Five members of the University's Games contingent, together with Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley and representatives from the Australian Institute of Sport, dined with the Vice-Chancellor Roger Dean and other University staff at the Staff Club on Friday.

Professor Dean presented each of the students with a book voucher to encourage them as they got back into study after the excitement of the games - not that the motivated group seemed to need much encouragement, with double gold medallist Nathan Deakes heading straight to the library after the lunch and Ms Bottomley on her way to finish off an assignment.

The University sent 10 students to the Games netting 14 medals including five golds, which, if the University were a country would place it 12th on the overall medals table.
