Research Focus for June 2005

ARC Visit, Celebrating Research and Launch of Research Impact 2004

Since our last Research Focus, the University had a successful visit with members of the Australian Research Council (ARC). This included a very well attended open meeting of researchers from across the University and a tour with members of the ARC to various facilities in the University to see the work being conducted in Media Research, Sonic Communications, Court of the Future, Wildlife Ecology Lab and the Eco Chemistry Lab. The new Research Impact document was launched by PVC Research and Information Management, and a number of people attended the very successful Celebrating Research day. Next Lunchtime Research Seminar Wednesday 15 June

The next Lunchtime Research Seminar will be held on Wednesday 15 June and will focus on the important areas of intellectual property, contracts and insurance. Speakers will be Gary Foran, Michael Flynn, Brian Fisher, Gar Ryan and David Middleton. The seminar be held in the Council Room from 12:30pm to 13:40pm. University Research Grants Closing Dates for 2005

Applications have now closed for the following categories:

University Strategic Research Grants, University Multi-Disciplinary (Strategic) Research Grants and University Start Up (Strategic) Research Grant .

The following scheme remains open:

University Industry (Strategic) Collaborative Research Grants
Offering 6 grants of $10,000-$25,000 matching industry funding - open all year

NHMRC and ARC Rejoinder processes and new grant opportunities

NHMRC assessments for Project Grants are now going out to universities. ARC rejoinders are anticipated in the next month or so. Researchers are encouraged to check the relevant websites of these organisations in particular for new opportunities expected to come up later this year.

 

ARC and NHMRC Workshop for Research Administrators

Staff from ORRD recently attended a specific workshop for Research Administrators conducted by the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council. A number of new funding opportunities are anticipated and they will be advertised in due course.

Antarctic Scientific Research and Grant applications

The Australian Antarctic Division invites applications from scientists who wish to participate in Australia's 2006/07 Antarctic science program. Applications for the new season close on 30 June 2005. For more details and application forms visit the AAD website or call 03 6232 3530

 

Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Grants 2005

Grants of $15,000 and $20,000 are on offer from the Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Foundation. The objective of the Foundation is to promote medical research for the benefit of war veterans and dependants. Applications are called for in the following areas of research:

Cardiovascular disease with an emphasis on prevention, early detection and clinical management; Cancer with emphasis on prostate cancer; Clinical evaluation of post traumatic stress disorder.

Applicants should note that applications need to be directed toward the treatment of specific veteran groups or the military. Preference will be given to high quality proposals from researchers in the early stages of their careers, ie 8 years or less postdoctoral applicants.

Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy

Applications are invited for the Harkness Fellowships to conduct a policy-oriented research project in the US for 4-12 months. Each fellowship will provide up to US$95,000 in support. For more information visit their website or telephone Prof Jane Hall on (02) 9514 4719.

RSPCA Australian Scholarships for animal welfare research

The RSPCA offers two scholarships of $7,000 each to encourage students to take an active interest in animal welfare issues and to support animal welfare research. The RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship of is for funding aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia; The RSPCA Australia Scholarship for Humane Animal Production Research is available for individual research projects related to the development of humane alternative animal production systems. Projects relating to alternative housing and husbandry systems for pigs and poultry are particularly encouraged.

Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research

The Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship for a research project at an Australian institution. Applications from biomedical, clinical and public health researchers are invited. It is expected that the successful applicant will have at least five years' postdoctoral experience. The fellowship provides salary and modest project maintenance costs.

The Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation Awards for 2006

Applications are invited for Research Training Fellowships, Research Scholarships and Project Grants in the area of Otorhinolaryngology or related fields of biomedical research. Project Grants are offered over 3 year period and must be conducted in an Australian or New Zealand university, teaching hospital or research institute. Max $90,000 per annum. Stipends and support offered for the Training Fellowships and Research Scholarships will be at NHMRC rates. Breaking Down Barriers Conference, 9-11 November 2005

The Open and Distance Learning (ODL)Association of Australia is holding a fully refereed conference on 9-11 November at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide. Major themes will be Transnational education, developing countries, addressing disadvantage; Excellence in teaching and learning for ODL; ICTs in open, distance and flexible education.

Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) Winter School - 2 to 6 July 2005

Applications are invited to the school which will be held at Lucas Heights Science and Technology Centre (ANSTO). Scholarships available to all senior undergraduate students. For details please see the AINSE website or send an email.
