UC to host national cultural studies conference

University of Canberra will host the annual Cultural Studies of Australasia (CSAA) conference, UNAUSTRALIA, next week from 6 th to 8 th December.

The conference covers a wide range of topics from fashion to politics featuring seminars, discussion panels, workshops and more. Around 170 local and international presenters will deliver papers with renowned French philosopher Professor Jacques Rancière, delivering a keynote address in the Great Hall of the Australian Parliament House on Thursday evening.

The conference will also feature keynote addresses at the University of Canberra by prominent Australian social commentators. Larissa Behrendt, Director of Research at the UTS Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, will speak on Australian Values; Australian Fair - The Rhetoric of Inclusion and Exclusion in Australian Identity.

Catherine Lumby, former foundation Chair of the University of Sydney Media and Communications Department, will discuss Unrepresentable Democracy and the political zeal "to define Australians in terms of what we are not ". Klaus Neumann, will deliver a public lecture Unaustralia: What and where is it? Who lives there? in Garema Place, Civic.  

Professor John Frow will close the conference with the 2006 University of Canberra Don Aitkin public lecture, Unaustralia: Strangeness and Value . An introductory live sound art performance will be given by the University's Vice-Chancellor.

Other events include the opening of an on-line gallery at the National Museum of Australia's Garden of Australian Dreams and a two-day workshop under the theme of "Fashion and Dress in UNAUSTRALIA" to be held at University of Canberra.

The CSAA annual conference will run from December 6th - 8 th at the University of Canberra and venues around Canberra.
