University Appoints New Head of Forensics

University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Professor Roger Dean is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Chris Lennard as the new Head of Forensic Studies.

Professor Lennard commenced with the University of Canberra at the end of last month after serving over 12 years with the Australian Federal Police (AFP).   Originally from Braidwood, Professor Lennard gained a PhD in forensic science from the Australian National University before taking up a postdoctoral position at the School of Forensic Science, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Between 1989-1994 he held the position of Associate Professor in Criminalistics at the same institution, before returning to Australia to work in the field of forensics with the AFP.

Professor Lennard held various positions with the AFP, most recently as Chief Scientist.

He has expertise in the chemical analysis of trace evidence (including explosive residues, flammable liquids, textile fibres, and paint) and a strong background in the detection and enhancement of latent fingermarks.   He is a member of the International Fingerprint Research Group and will be hosting the next biennial meeting of the group in Canberra in March 2007.

Professor Dean said Professor Lennard's extensive expertise in the field of forensics made him a perfect candidate to head up the University's expanding school.

"With more than 12 years operational forensic experience with the AFP, Chris is in an excellent position to develop forensic programs that are relevant to the Australian forensic science community," Professor Dean said.

The existing forensic program at University of Canberra includes a Bachelor of Forensic Studies and a Bachelor of Forensic Studies/Bachelor of Laws double-degree.   This will be expanded over 2007 to include a number of graduate programs.
