UC to allow direct enrolments for 2007

The University of Canberra is now accepting direct applications for admission to any of its undergraduate courses. Applications can be submitted directly to its Admission Office, free-of-charge, for immediate assessment.    Students who attended high schools in the National Capital Region are reminded that they also receive five bonus points on their UAI when they apply to study at the University of Canberra.

The University of Canberra has seen steady growth in the numbers of commencing students in the past few years, and over the last few years there have not been enough university places available to meet the demand for entry. This has driven up UAI scores at the University and affected some students in the National Capital Region.

However the strength of the economy in the ACT and NSW and the low unemployment rate has meant that many students are choosing to study part-time. This means that there are many more places available for students in 2007. There are still plenty of opportunities for residents of the ACT or NSW who have decided late in the year that they would like to make a career change or to embark on a particular course of study.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sharon Bell has been leading the University's strategy to provide accessible education to the ACT region. "The University is in a very good position to be able to vary its entry scores in 2007, much more than it has been able to over the last four or five years. This is a good news story for the ACT and NSW region", she said. "The University is confident that any student with a rank of at least 70 for the ACT and Queanbeyan and 65 in the National Capital Region will gain a place at the University of Canberra, even if it isn't to their course of first choice".

Courses with places available include journalism, public relations, architecture, hotel management and business.   The University of Canberra has experienced increased demand in the ICT discipline, as a result of the considerable success of the ICT course throughout 2006 with students taking out first and second places in the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. Even so, there are still places available.

The University of Canberra has traditionally attracted many mature age students into their courses.   This allows for career enhancement and career changes.   Traditionally mature age students also make a smooth transition into University life and are high academic performers.   The University has also developed new scholarship programs for school leavers and partnerships with key community groups in the Australian Capital Region.

Direct applications will be taken for the remainder of 2006 and into early 2007.
