Indigenous education in spotlight at UC

University of Canberra Indigenous students will be recognised for their academic and community achievements next week, Wednesday August 2, when the University puts the spotlight on excellence in Indigenous education.

An awards presentation will recognise the achievements of the University's Indigenous students in the areas of community engagement, academic excellence, student leadership and overall student achievement.

Ngunnawal Centre Director, Mr Terry Williams said it was a way of recognising the students' achievements at all levels.

"It's important to acknowledge the hard work done by these people at the University on all levels," Mr Williams said.

Past students will not be forgotten with an honour board to be unveiled of the names of students who have graduated from the Ngunnawal Centre since it's opening in 1986.

University of Canberra Chancellor, Professor Ingrid Moses will speak on the importance of community engagement in Indigenous education, and outline the University of Canberra Ngunnawal Centre's commitment to working directly with the community in a collaborative and empowering manner.

Other program highlights include a didgeridoo and chanting performance by the Kelly Gang followed by guest speaker, Director of the ACT Indigenous Education Unit, Mr Phil Nean.

The ceremony will conclude with a bush tucker lunch and an auction of art and memorabilia to support students of the Ngunnawal Centre attend the upcoming National Indigenous Tertiary Games in Queensland in September.
