University of Canberra welcomes new students

Orientation week at the University of Canberra will be held next week (starting Monday, 10 July) for over 500 students starting in Semester 2.   The official Commencement Ceremony will be held at 9.30 am on Wednesday 12 July.

Students will take part in such activities as market day on the concourse on Wednesday with a BBQ, live music and market stalls and campus tours.   The two bands playing on the concourse are University of Canberra students.   "Tripitide" plays acoustic pop music and the African Drumming group will also be entertaining students.

An important part of Orientation Week will be sessions to teach the practical skills needed for a university education.   Students will be given a library orientation and attend sessions on participation in tutorials, writing assignments, using references and bibliographies and reading for tertiary study.

The University will also welcome 200 international students from over 30 countries.   Most of the students are from China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Vietnam, with other students from Fiji, Brazil, Ghana, Kuwait, US, Canada, Egypt, Pakistan, England, Malaysia, Singapore, Denmark and Bhutan.   In addition to the diversity in nationalities, there is also diversity in the courses being taken by the international students. The most popular courses are the Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Professional Accounting, Undergraduate and Postgraduate IT and Marketing Programs.    The University also has students studying Bachelor of Sports Management, Bachelor of Hotel Management, Master of Creative Writing and Master of Neonatal Nursing.   Approximately half the students are postgraduate with the other half undertaking an undergraduate (full degree) course.

The University is also pleased to welcome another group of 16 Beijing Police who are studying for the Master of Professional English.   These officers are being trained for the Beijing Olympic Games.
