UC staff recognised for contribution to learning

Four teams or individuals at the University of Canberra have been awarded $10,000 by the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education for programs or activities that have made an outstanding contribution to student learning at UC. Each team or individual will receive a Citation for their contribution at a special ceremony to be held in Sydney on August 8th.

Dr Nancy FitzSimmons from the University's Institute of Applied Ecology will receive a citation for developing an inquiry-based learning program in introductory biology that responded to the needs of diverse students.

Associate Professor Anne Campbell will be recognised for her work with transnational postgraduate students that equipped them with the motivation, skills and experience needed to become independent learners.

Dr Christine Kilham, Professor Tony Shaddock, Dr Joe Murik, Mr Tony Spinks and Mr Gary Woolley will receive a citation for their Educational Support and Inclusion Program. The program provides graduate opportunities for professional teachers assisting students with disabilities through networking, information exchange, research and community engagement.

Mr Bruce Lines (Student Administration), Ms Jenny Coggins (Secretariat) and Mr David Formica (ICT Services) will be recognised for innovation and collaboration across three work units, in enhancing student learning by supporting articulation pathways between University of Canberra and Canberra Institute of Technology.

Director of t he University's Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS), Professor Yoni Ryan, said she was delighted with the outcome and congratulated the successful staff.

"The awards are a substantial recognition of the University of Canberra's reputation of excellence in supporting learning. They highlight the achievements of particular staff, including the professional staff, who work to provide the best learning environment for UC students. There remain many staff who will be recognised in future years for their work in enhancing student learning."
