UC-PREP opens career path in teaching

Sue Honeyman knew that since her early twenties she had wanted to be a primary school teacher, but postponed this career due to family and work commitments.

In 2004, Sue made a decision to pursue her dream and enrolled in a UC-PREP course being offered through Goulburn's Mulwaree High School.   The UC PREP course enabled Sue to take up an offer at the University of Canberra for a Bachelor of Primary Education.

"While initially I'd wanted to enrol directly in the degree, in hindsight I'm glad I went through UC-PREP and would highly recommend it to others. The preparation was very beneficial and it gave me a chance to find out what it would be like at university and if I could cope with undertaking a four year degree. What I found was that I loved it," Sue said. "While it's not exactly like university the exercises are a good introduction and teach you some of the basic skills you will need such essay writing and referencing."

The course is run as a pathway to the University of Canberra and is specifically designed for students who have not studied for some time.

Sue is now in her second year of a Bachelor of Primary Education. Between studying full time, looking after her family and working part time Sue admits life is 'very busy'.

"Travelling, family and job commitments is a juggle but I love what I'm learning and the journey for me is worth it," she said.

While the UC-Prep course does not guarantee a university place it has a 95 percent success rate. UC-PREP is offered as a year long program beginning in February or as an intensive program throughout the year, with the next due to commence at Mulwaree High School on July 17.
