Student designs for National Botanic Gardens

University of Canberra Landscape Architecture students have used the Old Nursery Site at the Australian National Botanic Gardens for a project that aims to stimulate ideas and discussion for future development of the area.

The third year students were asked to create a design that would invigorate the site, located adjacent to the Eucalypt Lawn, Sydney Basin Gully and the Display Glasshouse. Since the 1960s the site has operated as a nursery, but has now been made available for broader use.   Students were required to consider aspects of horticulture, science, education and recreation and also be aware of a limited budget and the possibility of work being undertaken in stages.

Ideas include a concert space or amphitheatre, sculpture garden and artist's studio, children's play space, tearoom, exhibition space, arid garden or other ecological garden. Students analysed the site, investigated themes and concepts and developed a master plan and model.

The designs are on display in the theatrette foyer of the Information Centre at the Gardens from Wednesday 7 June to Monday 19 June 2006. A comments folder is available at the exhibition.
