International justice conference to guide research into the technology, design and safety of judicial environments

Debates about best practice in court security, cost effective technologies and judicial environments will lead the agenda at a conference organised by Canberra University criminologist and researcher Dr David Tait this month.

The Justice Environments Conference will be held at the University of Melbourne from April 20 to April 22 and will bring together experts from Australia and France to speak on architecture, technology and security in courts and tribunals.

The conference will provide guidance on new areas of research into judicial practices. University of Canberra academic, Dr David Tait said the interdisciplinary approach will draw together architects, judges and chief justices to build a better functioning judicial environment.

"This is a new way to drive research into judicial practices with close links to industry," he said.

Dr Tait is currently undertaking an Australian Research Council funded research project on the ways that juries respond to interactive visual evidence in courtrooms with a view to developing guidelines for courts using these new forms of evidence.

International speakers at the Justice Environments Conference include eminent European architect, Henri Ciriani, speaking on making justice environments more accessible; Designer of the Manchester Justice Centre, John Denton, speaking on the sustainable courthouse and Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, Michael Black, who will speak on the future of courts. Conference attendees include four Australian Chief Justices.
