New pharmacy degree offered at UC

The University of Canberra is offering a new degree, the Master of Pharmacy (Research), which has already drawn considerable attention and interest from the profession.

It is the first time that research based postgraduate pharmacy study has been offered in the region and has generated interest from qualified pharmacists and other health professionals in areas such as hospital, community, industry and government.

Course convenor, University of Canberra Associate Professor, Dr Gabrielle Cooper said there is an increasing market for such courses with career progression and remuneration within the health professions now recognising higher education studies.

"The provision of the new course addresses the lack of trained academics within pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. In addition it will assist in establishing a significant body of researchers within the local profession.

"The unique placement of Canberra as the National Capital also provides linkages with organisations such as the Therapeutic Goods Association and the Health Insurance Commission that creates research capacity not offered elsewhere in the country," Dr Cooper said.

Many of the projects run in the Master of Pharmacy (Research) will be co-supervised with research trained medical staff at The Canberra and Calvary Hospitals and ANU, Dr Cooper added.
