UC staff and students welcome Year of the Dog

University of Canberra's community will be welcoming the Year of the Dog when staff and students join in celebrating the Chinese New Year celebration on Monday, 30 January, 2006 at 12.30pm in the University of Canberra Refectory.

Leonie-Ruth Acland, Coordinator of the University of Canberra Harmony and Faith Project says the day will be an opportunity for staff and students to get together and join in the many activities planned.

There will be an exciting line-up of entertainment and food tastings, including a traditional lion dance, Chinese calligraphy, horoscopes and singing.   A highlight of the day will be a salad tossing which is a Chinese New Year tradition from Malaysia.

The children from the Kirrinari Child Care Centre will be helping to decorate the Refectory with red, the traditional colour of celebration in Chinese culture.   All participants are invited to wear red, whether it's a shirt, shoes, a scarf or even nail polish.

The celebration is the first to be held this year as a way of building inclusivity within the university's culturally diverse community. With over 82 different nationalities represented by University of Canberra's student population, Leonie-Ruth says the acknowledgement of celebrations from different cultures will assist in greater awareness and understanding of people from all walks of life.
