NEW DIRECTOR TO ENHANCE TEACHING AT UC

The University of Canberra has appointed Professor Yoni Ryan, formerly of Monash University and the Queensland University of Technology, as new Director of the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS).

Professor Ryan said she is particularly pleased to be joining the University of Canberra in view of the University being ranked eighth among Australian universities for excellence in learning and teaching .

She also believes the importance of quality teaching and learning in higher education is now being recognised by the Federal Government with the launch of the new Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

"Higher education is in a period of profound change and from a teaching and learning perspective, the launch of the Carrick Institute will provide a real stimulus to academic development in the roles of academics as professional teachers as well as researchers," Professor Ryan said.

Professor Ryan's research and teaching interests include staff development, particularly in relation to globalisation of education systems, curriculum and educational design; technology innovation and pedagogy; education policy; and student support online. She has consulted for the Department of Education, Science and Training (being co-author of the 'Borderless Education' reports), AusAID, ANTA and the Victorian Government.

CELTS is an independent academic unit at the University of Canberra and facilitates the professional learning of academic staff, contributes to policy development and provides advice on teaching, learning and scholarship in higher education.

Professor Ryan took up her appointment at the beginning of 2006.
