‘Mooting’ is the closest experience to work in a real courtroom a student can have before joining the legal profession. Students test their skills as they argue each side of a legal issue, with a ‘judge’ deciding the winner.
“It’s a real courtroom drama … it can be quite daunting to stand up in front of a judge and argue a point of law,” said coordinator of the mooting competition Jason Beer.
“Mooting prepares you for your legal career. Taking part in a mooting competition especially in the realistic atmosphere of the University of Canberra Moot Court is the closest thing you can get to battling it out in a real court room”.
The mooting question will deal with the restraint of freedom of the media to broadcast ‘adult material’, and whether or not the Commonwealth Government has the constitutional power to restrict the broadcasting of certain material.
A mooting competition enhances the overall understanding and knowledge of particular areas of law for each student, and also enhances their confidence in public speaking.
Many legal firms often demand that a candidate has, and can provide evidence of their mooting experience whilst at university.
Universities to compete include, ANU, University of Sydney, Newcastle, La Trobe, Tasmania and University of New South Wales along with Macquarie University, University of Technology Sydney and Queensland and Flinders University.
Two rounds of the competition will be hosted in the University of Canberra Moot Court with legal practitioners and members of the law faculty adjudicating each round.
The finals will be held in Australia’s High Court and will be adjudicated on by Justice Michael Kirby.
A demonstration of mooting will be available to the media at the following time:
