28 August: New data released this month shows an increase in enrolments of 24.6 per cent compared with the second semester 2007.
Undergraduate enrolments are up 27.3 per cent, while postgraduate enrolments are up 20.3 per cent. Enrolments by international students have risen by 26.1 per cent.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (education) Professor Carole Kayrooz welcomed the news.
“This is encouraging news particularly as we prepare to welcome potential students, their families and the community onto campus for Open Day on Saturday,” Professor Kayrooz said.
“These figures show students are attracted to our professional degrees and recognise University of Canberra graduates are in demand from employers.
“The latest edition of the Good Universities Guide gives the University of Canberra a maximum five star rating for ‘getting a job’, demonstrating our graduates are among the most employable in the country.”
Professor Kayrooz said the increased enrolments were the result of demand for University of Canberra graduates, a revamped curriculum and ongoing program of renewal at the University, concerted marketing efforts and increased visibility of the University – partly as a result of the on-going 40th anniversary celebrations.
The University’s positioning as Australia’s Capital University was also gaining traction and proving particularly attractive to overseas students, she said.
‘Commonwealth Supported Places’ (CSPs) for postgraduate students, where government subsidies significantly reduce the cost of postgraduate degrees, had contributed to the rise in enrolments. Professor Kayrooz confirmed the University would be able to offer CSPs for new postgraduates in semester one 2009.
"Setting a wage that allows everyone who wishes to work to find paid employment must be the core aim of the Fair Pay Commisson. Pricing workers out of jobs should be strenuously avoided.”
