New hands, faces, voices - cutting edge transplant surgery

20 August 2008: The surgeon who performed the world’s first hand transplant will discuss the latest advances transplant surgery at the University of Canberra tomorrow.

Adjunct professor of orthopaedics and microsurgery at the University of Canberra and director of the Italian Institute of Hand Surgery Marco Lanzetta will discuss the emerging field of non-lifesaving transplantation.

In his seminar New Hands, A New Face and A New Voice: Organ Donation and Transplantation Today, he will explain how this growing field sees organs transplanted from donors to improve somebody’s life rather than save or prolong it. There have been remarkable successes in hand, face and larynx transplants, but there are also significant risks, which Professor Lanzetta will outline.

The 2005 Italian Doctor of the Year, Professor Lanzetta has performed surgical reconstructions in developing countries and on victims of terror attacks in Saudi Arabia.
