14 August: A film by University of Canberra students featuring Olympic Relay Torch Bearer Alby Wooler, was one of seven ‘environmental champion’ stories to premiere in a new documentary film at the Beijing Olympic Games.
The film traced Mr Wooler as he participated in the Olympic Torch Relay staged in Canberra. The film was shot and edited by film students from the Faculty of Design and Creative Practice at the University of Canberra, and made its debut last night at 8:30pm inside the Coca-Cola “Shuang Experience Centre,” within the Olympic Green complex of sports and media venues.
The University of Canberra student filmmakers were called upon to capture the personal story and environmental work of Mr Wooler, a highly regarded and inspiring leader of environmental volunteer work for more than 20 years.
Film and television lecturer at the University of Canberra, Michael Sergi who led the student project said, "This was a wonderful opportunity for our media students. They were thrilled to be involved in the Olympic Torch Relay and to tell the world of the extraordinary environmental work of Alby Wooler. Being the only Australian film to be part of this world wide project just makes it even more exciting."
Mr Wooler was selected to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay during the Canberra leg of its global journey to Beijing and it was during this time that he was nominated to feature in the global film documentary.
Mr Wooler’s accomplishments have been woven into the final documentary piece that culminated in the global documentary premiere. The film included environmental champions from all corners of the globe including Turkey, Russia, Pakistan and Tanzania.
