Guidelines for creating URLs

Structure

The primary URL for the UC website is http://www.canberra.edu.au and all other URLs are to be treated as subdivisions of this URL. URLs such as http://www.[name].canberra.edu.au are not permitted.

The URL for any unit of the University with a distinctive name should be http://www.canberra.edu.au/[name], e.g. http://www.canberra.edu.au/library

The following exceptions apply:

  • Faculties should include the element /faculties/, e.g. http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/business
  • Centres should include the element /centres/, e.g. http://www.canberra.edu.au/centres/healthpact

Note: the word “name” can refer to the acronym or abbreviated form of a name as well as the actual official name of a unit within the university.

Style

  1. URLs should be in lower case thoughout. Using mixed case leads to confusion.
  2. URLs requiring compound words should use hyphens not underscoring. Underscores are invisible when underlined, which is the normal style for a URL.
  3. Care should be taken that URLs may be easily understood when spoken, e.g. read over the telephone.
  4. File names should not use characters which may be reserved for special use or be unsafe, e.g. # $ %.
