2007 Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to Australian children's literature as an academic, researcher and mentor to emerging writers and illustrators, to the development and management of the Lu Rees Archives of Australian Children's Literature and to professional associations

2005 Distinguished Services Citation 2005, awarded by the Children's Book Council of Australia, for services on a national level

2005 Excellence in Practice Award for 2005, Writing for Young People in the Master of Creative Writing. Awarded by the Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia

2005 Vice-Chancellors Distinction Award for Enhancing and Contributing to the University as a Community

2000 National Finalist, Australian Awards for University Teaching, Humanities and the Arts, nominated by the Australian Universities Teaching Committee, Department of Education Training & Youth Affairs

2000 Awarded the Nan Chauncy Award, presented by the Childrens Book Council of Australia for outstanding contribution to Australian childrens literature

1997 Commended, National Awards for Best Practice in Adult Education/Human Resource Development awarded by the Australian Institute of Training & Development, University of Canbera Professional & Vocational Education, and the Australian Association of Adult and Community Education for Probabilities and Possibilities: Internships and Work Experience, produced with P Milne and K Gemmell (video and book)

1996 Awarded the Dromkeen Medal, presented by the Governors of the Courtney Oldmeadow Childrens Literature Foundation for recent work that makes a significant contribution to the appreciation and development of childrens literature

1996-  Fellow of the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS) University of Canberra - award for 'demonstrated excellence in teaching, leadership among colleagues and scholarship in teaching'

1996 Dons Dozen - chosen by colleagues for helping to move the University of Canberra forward, awarded by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Aitkin

• Connecting Communities through Story: The Festival of Australian Children's Literature. ACT Festival Fund 2012. Funded by the ACT Government, Economic Development. Funding $7944.83
  
• Story: Mental simulation, self-reflection and reminiscence, social interaction and personal wellbeing for seniors through Australian children's literature. ACT Seniors Grants and Sponsorship Program 2010-2011. Funded by the ACT Office for Ageing, Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services. Funding of $10,900.
   
• Catalogue the Japanese language editions of Australian children's books. Australia-Japan Foundation, Deapartment of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Commonwealth of Australia 2010. Funding of $1,115.
  
• Determining both Significance and Preservation Needs Assessments for the Lu Rees Archives to provide a blueprint for its future development. Community Heritage Grant 2010. Funded by the National Library of Australia; the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts; the National Archives of Australia; the National Film and Sound Archives; and the National Museum of Australia. Funding of $8,800.
  
• Preserving and Promoting the Lu Rees Archives Artwork for Research and Exhibition Purposes. The Lu Rees Archives of Australian Children's Literature. Funded by the Canberra Institute of Technology, Community Skills/Training Support Grants Program, 2009-2010. Funding of $4,500.
  
•  Preservation Rehousing of Walter McVitty Publishing and Research Collection. Community Heritage Grant 2001. Funded by the National Library of Australia; the National Archives of Australia; and Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts with Tracey Golds, Conservation of Cultural Materials, University of Canberra. Funding of $5,000.
  
• Lu Rees Art Works on Paper. Community Heritage Grant 1994. National Preservation Office, with Wendy Smith. Funding of $3,160. 
  
• Creation of national online database and published guide, Lu Rees Archives of Australian Children's Literature: A Guide to the Collections. Canberra: Canberra College of Advanced Education Research Committee, 1988.  Additional support in kind: staff and computer time provided by the ACT School Authority in 1989; from 1990-1994, Australian Schools Catalogue Information Service provided staff and computer time. Funding of $7,965.
