Funds for New Resources
Each Faculty has a fund for purchasing Library resources which is allocated according to a formula agreed by the Vice Chancellor's Group. The amount is largely based on the previous year's student numbers. For more information about how these funds are allocated, contact your Academic Planning Librarian.
Selecting Items for the Library Collection
Selection of material to be purchased by the Library is a joint process involving teaching staff, the Academic Planning Librarians and the Library's Academic Services Team. Teaching staff are encouraged to send proposals for items not already held in the Library. Please allow at least two months for receipt of items ordered from overseas.
Gaps in the Collection
If you identify gaps in the Library collections, or a lack of recently published items, in areas relevant to teaching at UC, please send proposals for books, DVDs etc. to the Library, or contact your Academic Planning Librarian who can arrange to have lists of recently published materials sent to you.
Sending Proposals to the Library
Proposals for new items can be ordered online or emailed to the Library's Orders team (orders@canberra.edu.au) or sent by internal mail on a Library Proposal Form (available from your Academic Planning Librarian or from the Information and Loans Desk in the Library). Proposals may need to be authorised by your Dean of Faculty.
Please include:
- Your name and Staff ID
- Unit name
- No of copies
- Collection (3 hour, 7 Day or General - all items go to General, unless otherwise advised)
- If you wish to be notified of arrival or have the item reserved and be notified of arrival
Multiple copies of recommended texts
Due to an increase in the University's budget allocation for Library resources the rule of purchasing only one copy of required or recommended textbooks for the Library can be relaxed. Multiple copies of recommended texts, as cited in your Unit Outline Reading Lists, will now be held in the Short Loan Collection and available for 3 hour/7 day loan. The number of copies we will purchase will be determined by the number of students enrolled: 1 copy for < 30 students, 2 copies for 30-59 students, 3 copies for 60-99 students and 4 copies for >100 students
Students can still expect to purchase their own copies of textbooks but these multiple copies in the Library will relieve some of the financial pressure.
Checking the Progress of an Order
To check if the item you ordered has arrived, search the Catalogue. Items displaying the status of "On Order" have not yet been received by the Library while an "In Transit" or "At Cataloguing" status indicates that the item has been received and is being processed
If you indicated on your proposal that you want to be advised when the item is available or if you have reserved the item, you will be notified by email when it is ready to be borrowed.
Publishers' Catalogues & Alerting Services
Academic Planning Librarians regularly forward catalogues from book and video publishers to teaching staff. They can also arrange for you to set up your own alerting service with book suppliers who will notify you by email of new publications in your subject area.
