Research Skills Training

Semester 1 training sessions

The sessions outlined below will be offered in the early weeks of Semester 1.  Click on the Details & register button to see more information about each session and to register for a date & time which suits you.

Venue for all sessions is Training Room 4 on Level A of the Library

If you find that you aren't able to attend a session you have previously registered for we would appreciate it if you could let us know by emailing librarytraining@canberra.edu.au

For training at times other than our scheduled program, contact us to organise a small group session at a time which suits you.  Alternatively, you may find one of our online tutorials helpful.

Library introduction

A Library tour and a short introduction to the Library web page, exploring the links to information and resources which are accessible from anywhere, any time

  • Duration: Exploring the Web page 20-25 minutes + Library tour 20-25 minutes

Beginning research for assignments

Learn about the basic but essential skills and terminology which underpin effective research

  • Duration: 50 minutes

Finding journal articles

Learn how to find scholarly journal articles using the Library’s online resources

  • Duration: 50 minutes + time for hands-on practice

Using references effectively

Learn how to use information effectively in your assignments, how to correctly reference your information sources and how to avoid plagiarism

RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based referencing tool which enables you to create and organise your own personal database of references and to easily use those references in your assignments. RefWorks is ideal for undergraduate students

  • Pre-requisite: Basic knowledge of referencing
  • Duration: 90 minutes

EndNote

EndNote is a computer-based referencing tool which enables you to create and organise your own personal database of references. EndNote is suited to the needs of postgraduate students and research staff preparing papers for publication

  • Pre-requisite: Basic knowledge of referencing and file management on personal computers 
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Small group sessions

  • Organise a group of friends or classmates who would like to attend any of the sessions outlined above at a time which suits you
 

Law resources for non-Law students

  •  This session introduces students in disciplines other than Law to finding legislation and other basic legal information

Research consultations (for UC staff researchers & higher degree research students)

  • Make an appointment for a one to one introduction to discipline-specific resources

Librarians on call (for academic staff)

  • Call on the expertise of Library staff for an update on library resources at your desk, at your convenience

Teach yourself

  • If you can't attend face-to-face sessions in the Library, or need a refresher, view one or more of our online tutorials
  • PILOT
    • Six online modules covering all aspects of research aimed at helping students find and manage information effectively
