Some abbreviations explained

ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)

Each serial title (including journals, magazines & newspapers) has a unique internationally recognised 8 digit number. The ISSN helps to distinguish serials with the same name.

Examples of ISSNs are:

• 0066-4162
• 1558-9080

DOI (Digital Object Identifier)

Some major academic publishers provide unique identifiers, numbers and sometimes text, to journal articles within their publications.

Examples of DOIs are:

• 10.1126/science.1162494
• 10.1086/591688
• 10.1007/s00265-008-0619-z

If you have a DOI no further information need to typed onto the form. The DOI search should take you directly to the article, or at least the publication details for it.

PMID (PubMed Identifier)

PubMed is the major biomedical sciences and life sciences database published by the National Library of Medicine in the U.S. The PMID number is unique to each article indexed.
