Student Commons and Teaching Commons
These facilities provide state of the art collaborative spaces for staff and students. Visit them in Building 1 Level C (above The Refectory).
The Student Commons
The Student Commons provides a place for students to come together, formally and informally, and a place to study, individually and collaboratively, in innovative, technology enabled spaces. With a range of open spaces and enclosed bookable rooms, the Student Commons provides excellent opportunities for student interaction and engagement.
Facilities include:
- Open lounge spaces - informal spaces for impromptu or scheduled gatherings
- Open study spaces - with moveable desks and chairs, students can configure as required
- Open meeting rooms – equipped with power and network to the table, high quality projection screens for presentation and collaborative work
- Enclosed bookable rooms – equipped with high quality projection screens for presentations, collaborative work or Skype video conferencing, these are ideal for producing and practicing group presentations or holding student meetings
The Student Commons is intended for student-focused activities, and can be booked by both students (for any UC-related purpose) and staff (for peer-mentoring sessions, extra help sessions etc.).
Bookings
Students and staff can claim the spaces by adding details to the bookings sheets within the Student Commons.

The Teaching Commons
The Teaching Commons provides staff with a place to meet and collaborate, both formally and informally, in lounges, open spaces and bookable rooms. The new spaces are technology-enabled and encourage interaction and experimentation, providing innovative opportunities for your activities.
Facilities include:
- Open Lounge – An informal space where you can hold ad-hoc or planned gatherings, whilst still having access to screens or projectors to share work and ideas together. There are skype enabled screens, wireless audio, printing facilities, hot water for tea & coffee or chilled water for filling your water bottle. WIFI is available throughout.
- Common Spaces 1 & 2 – Meeting, presentation or discussion space equipped with an interactive data projector and writable Idea-paint walls, capacity 12-20 (depending on layout)
- Hothouse Studio - Meeting, presentation or discussion space equipped with interactive data projector and writable Idea-paint walls, capacity 18-26 (depending on layout)
- Sessional Staff Office – An open office that provides 3 workstations for staff or sessionals to use for temporary office space, available on a first come basis.
