Coming to Canberra

We can meet you at Canberra Airport

Organise Overseas Student Health Cover:

Australia has a special system of health cover for international students in Australia. This is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and, with the exception of students from Sweden and Norway, you are required to have this for the duration of your student visa in Australia. OSHC provides a health care safety net for international students similar to that provided to Australians through Medicare (Australia's national health insurance scheme).

Australian Visa

A visa is required for you and any of your family members travelling with you.

Australia Customs

Be aware of what you can’t bring into Australia and what you must declare to Customs on arrival.

Travelling to Canberra from Sydney

  • By plane: Approximately 50 minutes. You can choose to fly with Qantas or Virgin Blue
  • By coach: Approximately 3.5 hours
  • By car: Approximately 3.5 hours.

Reception Service for New Arrivals

Ask us to meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation.

Getting ready for your student life

To assist new students the University organises orientation activities in the first and second semesters to:

  • help you enrol and receive your student card,
  • help you find your way round the campus.

Open your Bank account

Take your student card and other identification with you when you apply for a student account with any of the local banks (Student accounts are free of annual bank fees). A branch of the Commonwealth Bank is located on campus.

Please note: It might take a few working days for your key card, needed to access your bank account from automatic teller machines, to arrive.

Working while you study?

Please make sure you are able to balance study and work, and make sure you work legally as permitted in your visa.

You will need a tax file number and a work permit, both easy to get, to work in Australia.
