I was attracted to the fact that UC was a small institution and had an energy about it.

close quotes

I came to the University of Canberra after a lengthy period in the government sector. I had worked in Federal and NSW Government in a range of research, policy and law reform roles. I teach and research in criminal law and criminology and my experiences outside academia are directly relevant and provide vital context.

As a lecturer and unit convenor, I am passionate about my subject matter. I enjoy engaging with students, especially in tutorials, which I consider the most valuable and fun part of teaching.

I am a very active researcher, combining sole-authored publications with collaborations with academics across Australia and overseas. I also co-author papers with a number of my students. In 2015, a paper I co-authored was runner-up for the Allen Austin Bartholomew Award for the best article published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology – the top Australian journal in my field.

As Head of the School of Law and Justice (2016-2018), I helped to establish mentoring programs for female and Indigenous students in the School and oversaw the review of the School's curriculum. I was attracted to the fact that UC was a small institution and had an energy about it.

There is a real focus on developing academics who are committed to enhancing the student journey.

close quotes

Optometry is very new to the University of Canberra – our first cohort of students started in February 2018. Prior to this, I was a senior lecturer in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Auckland

After seven years of working in a private practice, I returned to university to undertake my PhD. My thesis led to the development and commercialization of a novel soft contact lens that reduces the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) by 50%. Since then I have worked with a number of interdisciplinary research groups. As optometry is continually evolving, I have developed policies and guidelines as a Professional Standards Advisor to the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand, to support this growth. I choose to come to UC to enjoy the challenge of starting a new academic department.

I love learning and teaching and UC helps me do this – there is a real focus on developing academics who are committed to enhancing the student journey.
