Indigenous Student Support

Meet Kentyn Obar

We look after our students at the University of Canberra, and you can read about our services to all students here.

The following services are especially for our indigenous students.

Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre

The Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre has been functioning as the focal point for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying at the University of Canberra since 1985 and offers the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation Program, as well as the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS).

The Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre serves its students and clients through the provision of excellent education and development through the Foundation Program and Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation Program

The aim of the Foundation Program is to provide students with the skills necessary to study at University. There are two units included in program which can be completed full-time or part-time:

  • Foundation Study Skills
  • Foundation Communication Skills

Students also complete a mainstream undergraduate unit which can contribute to a degree.

Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme is an academic initiative which aims to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students by providing supplementary tuition in undergraduate courses. The Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre receives DEEWR funding to cover the costs associated with employing tutors to provide one-to-one or small group tuition in subject specific areas.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Association (ATSISA)

ATSISA was established in 1997 to provide a support network for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending the University of Canberra and is run by students for students. ATSISA hold social functions throughout the year to give students the opportunity to get to know each other on a personal level, which is great for new students. Members of ATSISA also hold fundraising events, including BBQs, and source sponsorship for our students to attend events such as the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games.

National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games

The National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games (NITESG) is held every year and involves many universities from around Australia. Each year the games are a unique opportunity to bring together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students from around the country to participate and compete at a national level in mixed sports including basketball, netball, volleyball and touch football as well as an Indigenous cultural game. A single team of no more than 16 individuals comprising of 14 students and 2 staff contests all sports.

In 2009 the Games were held here at the University of Canberra.
