Printing, Scanning, Burning Disks etc.

Printing Services

All Building 5,8,10 & 11 printers are networked and all printing is charged through the print credit account system.

Each laboratory has a B&W laser printer.

In order to print students need credit in an individual printing account. To set up your print account, present your student ID card to the cashier at the Service Desk in Building 10 and make a deposit. There is no minimum deposit.

Printing Charges

  • B&W A4 printing is 15c per page
  • B&W A3 printing is 30c per page
  • Colour printing is $1.80 for A4 and $3.00 for A3

How do I add money to my printing account?

You can deposit money on one of the autoloaders in either Building 10 or the Library, you will need your Student ID Card. For EFTPOS and credit cards, use the cashier in Building 1.

Note: there is a $10 minimum on EFTPOS and credit card transactions.

How do I close my printing account?

Any unused money in your account can be refunded when you graduate. To close your print account, you will need to present your student ID card to the Cashier at the Service Desk.

Note: You cannot transfer money from print accounts to other accounts, e.g. to network accounts or to pay library fines.

Photocopying Services and Facilities

No general photocopying services are available in Building 10. Photocopying is available in the Library and in the Academic Divisions. Photocopying charges are the same as printing charges.

Colour photocopying is available from the Service Desk Counter. Colour photocopying can be paid by cash or cheque, or by providing cost centre details.

Scanning

PC Scanning

There is a scanner available in each of the PC labs. There are several ways to scan images on the PC depending on which graphics package you wish to use. The Service Desk recommends the following procedure:

How to Scan

  1. Open Photoshop (Start - Programs - Graphic Tools - Photoshop).
  2. In Photoshop, click on the File menu - select Import - select TWAIN 32 Source select either HP Scanjet Source in publishing lab or Epson Twain 5 in all other labs
  3. Click on File menu again and select Import Twain 32. This will open the respective scanning software within Photoshop. Note: When using Epson scanners, Epson Imaging Software will open using an automatic scanning procedure. Click Cancel and when given the option click Manual Mode.
  4. Where it says Image Type, click on the tab and select the type of scan - Colour Scan or B&W Scan.
  5. Click on the Preview Scan icon.
  6. If required, select the area within the preview scan you wish to save.
  7. Click the Final Scan icon.
  8. When the scanner has completed the scan, the scanning controls will disappear and the image will appear in Photoshop.
  9. Save the image.
  10. Click on the file menu - select Save As.
  11. Next to File Name type in your desired name of the file.
  12. Next to Save In select either your Student Server "H" Drive, your Zip Disk or your Floppy Disk. NOTE: Some images may be too large to fit onto a Floppy Disk.
  13. Next to Save As, choose the file type. It is highly recommended that you save it as a jpeg file format. This format uses a form of compression to make the file smaller when the file is unopened.
  14. Click Save. Note: You may get a jpeg options box after clicking save. This will give you a few options - mainly quality control. Select between 0-12 - 12 is the highest quality, but it also generates the largest file size. Leave the other settings as they are.

Mac Scanning

All Apple Macintosh Labs have at least one scanner. 

How to Scan Images


Phtotoshop icon
  1. Open Photoshop located in the Applications folder.
  2. Click on file - select import - select Epson 1420. Note: Epson Imaging Software will open an automatic scanning procedure. Click Cancel and when given the option select Manual Mode.
  3. Image Type: click on the tab and select the type of scan from the list that best describes your document.
  4. Click on the icon under Preview.+
  5. You may select a portion of the image to scan by dragging the mouse over it. The selected area is displayed as a rectangle on the image.
  6. Click the Scan button.
  7. When the scan has completed, the scanning controls will disappear and the image will appear in Photoshop.
  8. Image size is displayed in the bottom left of the image window.
  9. Click on the file menu and select Save As.
  10. Next to Name, type in your desired file name.
  11. Use the navigation window to choose where to save the file. You may save to your Student Server H Drive, a Zip Disk, or /User/u#######/Pictures. NOTE: Contents of /User/u#######/ are temporary and will disappear when you log out. You must copy files from this area if you wish to keep them.
  12. Next to Format, choose the file type. It is highly recommended that you save it as a jpeg file format. This format uses a form of compression to make the file smaller when the file is unopened.
  13. Click Save. NOTE: You may get a jpeg options box after clicking save. This will give you a few options - mainly quality control. Select between 0-12 - 12 is the highest quality, but it also generates the largest file size. Leave the other settings as they are.

CD/DVD Burning (Data Only)

All computers in Building 10 are capable of burning data to CD. The Macs in Building 10 are capable of buring data to DVD.

Note: Some brands of DVD-R are not compatible with these machines.
Note: Multi session recording is not possible on the Macs with the current configuration.
Note: The Service Desk will only provide support for burning data CD / DVDs.

Windows XP provides a drag-and-drop interface for buring data to a CD:

  1. Put the CD in the drive.
  2. Open the CD drive in My Computer.
  3. Drag the files you want burned into the open CD drive window.
  4. Click "Write these files to CD" on the left side of the window.
  5. Follow the instructions of the CD Writing Wizard.

For Macs, the procedure is as follows:

  1. Press the eject key on the keyboard (It's on the top right of the keyboard and marked with an up arrow) to open the drive bay doors.
  2. Place a blank CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R on the tray and press the eject
    key to insert the disk.
  3. When asked to name the CD, give it a name (e.g. your student ID or
    assignment name).
  4. Click the PREPARE button to continue.
  5. A CD icon will appear on the desktop with the name you selected.
  6. Select the files you want to burn and drag them to the CD icon.
  7. When you have finished, drag the CD icon to the trash.
  8. You will be asked to EJECT / CANCEL / BURN. Click BURN.
  9. Burn time varies depending on the amount of data.
  10. Once the disk has ejected, press the eject key to close the
    drive bay doors.
