Recruitment
1) How do I obtain a Staff ID Security Card?
Staff Cards are available from the Student Centre during the following times:
- Mondays to Thursdays 9:00am – 5:00pm
- Fridays 9:00am – 4:30pm
Staff are required to show photo identification, such as a Driver's licence or passport, when requesting a Staff Card.
Building access is organised via security. A memo from the Manager/Supervisor of the Staff Member should be provided to Security especially if after hours or multiple building access is required for the Staff Member's duties.
2) How do I organise induction for a new staff member?
Induction involves several steps; there is team induction and organisational induction.
Team Induction
To assist you in preparing and conducting new staff through the induction in their workplace there is a Workplace Induction Checklist (word 166kb) (pdf 530kb). It is important to begin working through the form prior to the commencement date to ensure the best possible start on their first day.
Please ensure that an appropriate person is available to collect and welcome the new staff member (inductee) on their first day of work. This person (the inductor) must then commence the team induction using the Workplace Orientation Checklist.
Ideally the direct supervisor of the new staff member will support them through the induction process, however a representative can be appointed to attend to the housekeeping arrangements eg. arranging internet and email access etc. using the Computer Access and Non Pay Form (this is located at http://www.canberra.edu.au/hr/forms/recruitment).
Once the Workplace Orientation Checklist has been completed by the Inductor and the Inductee, it must be signed and returned to the HR Unit for filing.
For further information about Induction, please see: http://www.canberra.edu.au/hr/development/induction/index.html
Organisational Induction
Organisational induction consists of an On-line Induction Course and a Face to Face Orientation Workshop. On-line Induction will be available from February 2010 and can be completed at any time. It is recommended that new staff complete this as soon as possible once their employment is confirmed.
Face to Face Orientation is held several times a year with groups of new starters. For more information please contact Human Resources.
3) How can I register for casual employment at the University of Canberra?
Casual Employment Register forms are available from the Human Resources Reception area.
You should complete this form, taking particular care to summarise your skills and experience on the front of the form, and return it to the Recruitment Office together with a copy of your resume.
Applications are held for six months, after which time, you should let us know if you wish to remain on the Register, or submit a new form and resume which will be held on the Register for another six months.
Those responsible for employing casual staff are most welcome to view our Casual Employment Register (02 6201 5157 to make a time) and to contact any candidates who possess the skills and experience required.
Classifications
1) How are classification levels determined?
Each position is evaluated against a set of national Higher Education classification standards. For general staff these are the Position Classification Standards. For academic staff these are the Minimum Standards for Academic Levels. The classification standards for general and academic staff are detailed in our main Workplace Agreement and are also accessible via the link http://www.canberra.edu.au/hr/services/classifications.
2) How do I apply to have my position evaluated for reclassification?
General Staff
You will need to read the handbook on the Evaluation Process for General Staff Positions (which details the documentation required for submission), the Position Classification Standards and complete the Request for an Evaluation of a General Staff Position form. These are available via the link http://www.canberra.edu.au/hr/services/classifications. All submissions for reclassification evaluation will require the approval of the Dean/Director.
Academic Staff
Academic staff positions are not evaluated through the reclassification process. Changes to work value for academic staff positions are recognised through the Academic Promotion process.
Salaries
1) When do I need a Medical Certificate?
You must provide a Medical certificate certified by a medical practitioner when you are on Personal Leave for 3 consecutive working days or longer.
The Calendar provides a list pay days for 2012. The pay cycle works on a fortnightly basis, with pay in arrears for the preceding fortnightly period. For example, pay day of Thursday, January 19th 2012, covers pay for the period Thursday January 5th to Wednesday January 18th 2012.
Unless otherwise advised, the cut off for HR receiving hard copy pay media (paper forms) is the Monday closest to the commencement of the pay period. In the above example this would be Monday 9th January. Electronic media (via HR Online) needs to be authorised by the Thursday before pay day, Thursday 12th January in the above example.

You do not need to apply for the co-contribution or fill in any additional forms; all you need to do is make personal superannuation contributions to your superannuation fund or retirement savings account (RSA) and lodge an income tax return. The Tax Office will use the information on your income tax return and contribution information they receive from your superannuation fund or RSA to work out whether you are eligible. If you are, the Tax Office will automatically calculate the co-contribution amount and deposit it into your superannuation account.

The choice to salary sacrifice is an individual decision and UC HR Staff are not qualified or authorised to provide financial advice. It is important to be aware that salary sacrifice may not be suitable for everyone. Therefore UC recommends that all employees seek qualified, independent financial advice.
3) Can I choose my own Super fund?
The University's current Enterprise Agreement (EA) makes no allowance for scheme choice. The University is exempt from offering choice of fund under section 32c(6) of the Superannuation Guarantee Administration Act 1992. Consequently you must become a member of the Universitys nominated fund, UniSuper.
