The Brand and Publication team, part of Marketing and International at the University of Canberra, is offering a career opportunity for a talented, experienced and highly creative Graphic Designer.

You’ll be joining a creative, enthusiastic and busy team of professionals producing high quality and effective marketing materials in every medium for the University.

The work covers design and production and includes press and magazine advertising, posters and banners, brochures and books, television and cinema commercials and internet advertising.

You’ll be able to demonstrate your experience and abilities in:

  • the use of the Adobe Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop on Macintosh computers
  • print production processes
  • taking and sourcing imaginative photographs
  • written and verbal communication skills including the ability to liaise and cooperate with internal clients and outside suppliers
  • ability to work to, and with a style guide
  • performing as a contributing member of a client focussed creative team
  • coping with a high volume of work while maintaining a sense of humour.

This is a full-time continuing position.

Position title: Graphic Designer

The Work Area:

Marketing and International is responsible for:

  • Developing and managing the University of Canberra brand;
  • Positioning the University as Australia’s Capital University;
  • Promoting the University’s courses, teaching and research internationally, nationally and locally across all promotional media including online;
  • Recruiting students in domestic and international markets;
  • Developing and supplying high level marketing advice, tools and services to the University;
  • Managing the University’s reputation in the news media;
  • Manage the University’s website; and
  • Building strong partnerships with graduates and other stakeholders.

Position Purpose:

The Graphic Designer, under broad direction from the Manager Brand and Publishing, is responsible for designing a range of publications for internal clients that communicate the University’s brand to identified target audiences. This new role will be part of a client-focused web and publishing team and will provide professional advice on design and print matters to the Manager Brand and Publishing and to other stakeholders. The role will also be responsible for effectively monitoring a publications budget.

Duties:

Duties required of the position may include:

  • Produce a range of University marketing materials (including brochures, displays, email and print newsletters, undergraduate and postgraduate guides, signage and print and electronic advertisements) to support the marketing of the University;
  • Work with the University web team to ensure that the University brand and style are maintained across University web sites;
  • With the Internal Liaison Officer, and in accordance with the brand, meet the needs for a graphic design service by the academic units of the University, including providing design advice, sourcing and providing quotes for printing and photography, and working to an allocated budget;
  • Seek quotes and liaise with printers, photographers, and production companies as required, and monitor the quality of their services;
  • Assist with the development of the University’s new brand manual and style guide;
  • Provide design advice on communicating the brand in the context of the University’s brand manual;
  • Develop and maintain a production database to manage design jobs with the objectives of delivering a timely and effective service to clients and managing workload;
  • perform administrative duties associated with maintaining the resources and infrastructure of the design area (e.g. computer equipment, copiers, paper supplies);
  • Develop and monitor budgets for client projects;
  • Other duties as required, appropriate to the classification level, including providing support to other team members.

Essential Selection Criteria:

1. Sound knowledge of the principles of graphic design and print production.

2. Ability to work effectively with external stakeholders such as advertising agencies, marketing consultants and photographers to communicate the University’s brand in printed materials, via the web, on campus signage and in other forms of marketing communication, and the ability to work to a Style Guide.

3. Ability to take and source quality photographs and a sound knowledge of image editing for design purposes.

4. Experience working in a client-focused design team, including providing advice to clients on design matters.

5. Experience developing and using databases to manage design jobs and photography in the studio.

6. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills including the ability to liaise with staff and stakeholders at all levels.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.

8. Ability to determine own work priorities and meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.

9. Experience using office-based computer software applications, including the Microsoft Office suite, as well as a high level of competency with design software including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and PhotoShop on Macintosh computers.

10. Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, equity and workplace health and safety principles.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  1. Appropriate tertiary qualifications or relevant experience.
