LANGUAGE AND LITERACY EDUCATION

The Faculty of Education is seeking an enthusiastic and talented person in the area of language and literacy education. The position will be at either Level C or D (depending on experience) and will provide the opportunity for a person to make a difference in the teaching profession. The University is located in the national capital that enjoys a rich cultural ethos within the relaxed lifestyle of a rural region.

The successful applicant would have both academic and professional experience in language and literacy education. She/he would be responsible for the leadership of the literacy team and fostering research and postgraduate studies in this area.

This is a full time continuing position.

A minimum of two written referee reports are required to accompany the application.

Position Description

Position Title: Senior Lecturer of Language and Literacy Education

Faculty: Education

Appointment Level: Academic Level C

Reporting to: Discipline Head, Curriculum Studies

Position No: 10441

Position Purpose:

The appointee will be expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of the Faculty or an interdisciplinary area.The appointee is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

Duties:

Specific duties required of this level may include:

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • Initiation and development of course material.
  • Course coordination.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • The conduct of research.
  • Significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.
  • Involvement in professional activity.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Broad administrative functions.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Attendance at Faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.

Selection Criteria:

In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard will be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or to technical achievement. In addition an appointee at this level will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline area.

Essential:

1. Academic qualifications, at Doctoral level, or equivalent accreditation and standing, and recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area.

2. Demonstrated capacity to design, develop, co-ordinate and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses.

3. Significant record of research and publication in an area of research strength within the Faculty.

4. Established links with outside organisations that are of benefit to the University.

5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills.

6. Demonstrated academic leadership qualities in respect of teaching, research, community interaction and professional excellence.

7. Capacity and commitment to contribute to flexible modes of academic program development and delivery.

8. Willingness and capacity to oversee and/or engage in entrepreneurial activities of benefit to the University.

9. Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to implementation of equity and workplace health and safety principles.

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The development of and responsibility for curriculum/programs of study.
  • Course coordination.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • The conduct of research, including, where appropriate, leadership of a large research team.
  • Significant contribution to the profession, and/or discipline.
  • High level administrative functions.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Attendance at Faculty meetings.

Selection Criteria:

In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard will be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or technical achievement. In addition an appointee at this level will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline area. In addition there is a requirement for academic excellence, which may be evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching and/or research and/or the profession.

Essential:

1. Advanced academic qualifications, normally at Doctoral level, or equivalent accreditation and standing and recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area.

2. Significant record of research and publication in an area of research strength within the Faculty.

3. Demonstrated links with outside organisations that are of benefit to the University.

4. Demonstrated capacity to design, develop, coordinate and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses and programs of study.

5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills.

6. Demonstrated academic leadership qualities in respect of teaching, staff mentoring, research, community interaction and professional excellence.

7. Demonstrated capacity to oversee and/or engage in entrepreneurial activities of benefit to the University.

8. Willingness and capacity to enhance the University’s provision of flexible modes of academic program development and delivery.

9. Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to implementation of equity and workplace health and safety principles.
