Emergencies may arise at anytime. They can develop from a number of causes including fire, chemical spills, gas leaks, bomb threats, structural faults and civil disturbance. Any of these may threaten the safety of the University's staff, students and visitors.

The University of Canberra is committed to establishing and maintaining procedures to control emergency situations that could adversely affect staff, students and visitors.

An Emergency Control Organisation has been established for the University. The ECO shall meet as required, but at least once every six months.

The University's Emergency Response Plan has been prepared in accordance the Work Safety Act 2008, its regulations and the Australian Standard 3745-2002, Emergency control organisation and procedures for buildings, structures and workplaces. 

Building emergency evacuation procedures shall be regularly reviewed and updated as needed to account for changes in personnel, building use and building alterations.

The most effective way to test emergency procedures is to conduct regular evacuation exercises. All areas of each building shall participate in an emergency evacuation exercise at least once per year.
