Equity and Diversity

UC is a University that values equity and diversity, and seeks to embody these values in its staff, students, academic programs and relations with the community.  In particular, the University will:

  • recognise, encourage and celebrate students from all sections of society;
  • promote an environment that fosters fairness, equity and respect for social and cultural diversity;
  • support students and staff to reach their full potential through the promotion of reasonable expectations and provision of an inclusive learning climate;
  • offer programs that aim to overcome disadvantage for student and staff groups;
  • provide a work environment that champions equity, providing a good example for the many students who learn with us.
  • ensure that staff and students are aware of their rights and responsibilities as members of the University community.

To assist staff in embracing the wonderful diversity at UC and in understanding their responsibilities in relation to equity and diversity the following resources are available:

Employer of Choice for Women

The University of Canberra has received the Employer of Choice for Women Citation in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In applying for this citiation each year we recognise that in many work places in Australia women still face barriers to receiving equal access to resources including promotion and pay equity.

The University of Canberra has a strong tradition of female leadership.  Dr Jean Blackburn was appointed the Foundation Chancellor from 1990-1991, and Professor Judith Brine was Vice-Chancellor in 1990. Through 1996 to 2005 Wendy McCarthy, in the role of Chancellor, led UC through her passion about the power of education. Emeritus Professor Ingrid Moses led UC recently in the role of Chancellor between 2006-2011.

The University of Canberra is committed to continuing to improve gender equity through initiatives that assist in the development of women such as the Women's Group Mentoring Program and through structured processes that ensure that there is equal remuneration for equal work. Our Enterprise Agreement ensures our there are no gender pay gaps and our regular review of our workforce through benchmarking initiatives such as the QUT HR Benchmarking allow us to constantly monitor gender equity at all levels of the University.

As a learning institution that helps grow the leaders of the future this helps equip our students with an expectation that this is the rule and not the exception.
