About the Program

The University of Canberra (UC) recognises the importance of welcoming new staff and assisting them to quickly become part of the UC community. The UC Induction Program has been designed to assist you to settle in to your new job as quickly and smoothly as possible.

The Induction Guide is a person from your new workplace who has been given the responsibility for welcoming you to the university and acting as a guide throughout your induction program. The Induction Guide may be your supervisor/manager or a colleague. The vital thing about the Induction Guide is that they have a good knowledge of your job and can provide you with assistance to familiarise yourself with your new role. The Induction Guide will have been given their own checklist of items which begins with processes required before your arrival and continues through to the completion of your induction.

An Induction Checklist for the Induction Guide is available (RTF format).

You should have been sent an induction checklist with your offer of employment. The checklist specifies the activities you must complete during your induction. So as to make the induction experience totally relevant, your workplace will probably incorporate activities onto your checklist that are workplace and job specific. You are required to complete the induction program within 6 months of joining UC. Once the program has been completed you will send the completed and signed declaration on the back of the checklist to Human Resources where it will be placed on your personnel file. All employers have certain legal responsibilities for their staff, completion of the induction program confirms that UC has provided certain key areas of information to you such as OH&S and Equity policies

Our Staff

The University of Canberra employs a very diverse workforce. The University has over 700 permanent Academic and General Staff. This is supplemented with sessional staff and during semester the total number of staff can exceed 1200.

Policies and Practices

There are a multitude of policies and procedures utilized at the University of Canberra. All staff require knowledge of policies and procedures relating to their specific workplace. UC Courses and Services

The University of Canberra offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to students locally, nationally and internationally. Many nationalities are represented on campus and off-shore teaching is becoming increasingly important in the University's strategic direction. The great diversity in our student population requires significant attention to the range and focus of our courses and services.

About the University

The University of Canberra was established in 1967 as the Canberra College of Advanced Education. The University of Canberra Act 1989 came into effect on 1 January 1990. On 1 December 1997 jurisdiction for the University was passed to the Australian Capital Territory.

The university is situated on a 119 hectare site, 8 km from the central business district.

The University of Canberra has an enrolment of over 9000 students. Nearly 20% of students are enrolled in post-graduate courses and part-time staff account for a third of the student population. More than half of the student body are under 25 years of age and women account for 56% of the enrolment.

The governing authority of the University is the Council. Courses are administered by Schools, which are organised into Divisions.
