What is Career Management?

Career Management is the active development of a person's career through understanding their aspirations,  matching them to appropriate roles and then developing the required skills and knowledge to support the aquisition of these roles.

Career Management does not need to be about the progression 'up the corporate ladder' but often involves moves across the University to broaden skills and knowledge. Very few careers are linear and in fact, often the most interesting roles are at the specialist level.

UC recognises the importance of career planning as one the strategies for staff and organisational development. As we continue to grow and evolve as a University, opportunities are often created that allow staff to progress their careers.

Career planning and development is the responsibility of an individual staff member with the support of their manager.  Staff need to take an active role in their development, discussing their aspirations at PDR time and working with their Manager to pursue development that will assist them in their current role and where possible selecting development that will assist them to progress their careers.

To assist you in developing your career goals the following information is available:

Organisational Structure

The organisational chart is a good source of information about the career possibilities that exist at the University. If you see an area that interests you, monitor job advertisements to see what is required to apply for a role in this area or you might even like to contact the manager of the area to find out more information.

While your ideal role may not exist at the University, other roles that will build your skills and knowledge to support your career aspirations may exist and you are more likely to be successful in progressing if you take a positive active role in developing toward these aspirations.

Recruitment Process

Progression through application for advertised jobs is the most common way of developing a career. At UC staff selection is based upon the key principles of merit, equity and fairness.  More information on our recruitment procedures can found in the UC Recruitment policies of the University Policy Database and in our Recruitment and Selection e-learning course.
