January

The University of Canberra Health Centre is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday all year round for all your medical needs. The Centre is staffed by General practitioners, Registered Nurses, Psychologists and Social Workers. The only time we are closed is during the official shut down period between Christmas Day and New Year Day, and on public holidays. When we are closed, General Practitioner medical care is available from CALMS (Canberra After Hours Locum Medical Services). There is also a after hours GP Helpline (operated by healthdirect Australia) that is available for medical advice.  This service is available on 1800 022 222 at nights, on weekends and on public holidays - 365 days per year.

The Counsellors at the Health & Counselling Centre also offer UC students appointments all year. If you have any problems which could interfere with your studies (such as family concerns, feeling down, stress or have difficulty with time management), the counsellors urge you to come early in the semester for assistance.

During the busier times, students normally experience some level of stress in juggling all their commitments, and those negative feelings felt at the start of the year might resurface. You may not have identical experiences as your classmates or share them at the same time but the adjustment process is characterised by excitement and apprehension for all who are exposed to changes. Persistent negative feelings, however, indicate that these changes require some decision about how you might handle them differently. Some students may decide leaving university is their best decision for the time being, or decide to change their course, learn new skills in their social and academic life. The University of Canberra Counselling Service can assist you to handle these changes in any stage of the adjustment process.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION IDEAS

Whilst on the topic of starting off the year in a positive way, why not also take the time to have a HEALTH CHECK
