August

The start of Semester 2 and the last month of winter.

August celebrates 2 important events:

•    National Healthy Bones Week which aims to remind us that we need to take care of our ‘inside’ bone health for long term well being.

Tips for doing this include:

  • Staying active because weight bearing exercise helps with bone density;
  • Maintain at least three serves of Calcium per day - check this out with
  • Check you Vitamin D level as Vitamin D is essential for bone health.
Is your diet and lifestyle contributing to good life-long bone benefits?

Some radiology service providers help to celebrate this event by offering half price bone density scans if you are over 25 years old. If you are interested in having this done, speak to one of the doctors at the University Health Centre.

•    Jeans for Genes Day is a major fundraiser of the Children's Medical Research Institute.  Their focus is on researching the causes of genetic diseases such as leukaemia, muscular dystrophy so that they can be  prevented, or where that is not possible to develop better treatments.

Student life and adjustment

For those students who are starting study at UC in Semester 2, the challenges of study may require some adjustment in your life.  The Counselling Centre is there to assist you.
