The Communication major first introduces students to the key theoretical and research directions in media and communication, and develops an understanding of ways of thinking about communication in societal, cultural and ideological contexts. Students examine key studies of communication and media in order to develop an understanding of the application of theory and research to communication and media issue analysis and problem solving. The major allows students to focus study on mass communication, new technology and globalisation, the relationships between language, culture and society, history, cultural identity and postcoloniality, audiences, cultural practices and communication in organisational settings.

This major provides students with a powerful combination of theoretical knowledge of issues that impact on professionals in a globalised workplace, and practical communication skills that are in strong demand by employers. This five- or six- subject sequence will develop students’ ability to manage professionals in a business environment characterised by change, complexity and ambiguity; to understand power and authority structures in organisations; to think strategically at the enterprise-wide level; and to apply critical thinking skills to enable sound problem solving and decision making. Other outcomes of this major will be an understanding of technologies that underpin enterprise communication, and end-user computing abilities for research, analysis and communication.

This major has been designed for students who do not want to be computing 'technical experts' but do want to make good use of computing as a tool. Focus is on the analysis, design and management of information systems that assist people to perform various tasks. At the end of the major, students should feel generally competent in using computers and in designing extensive information systems. Students will not be confronted with computer programming or with the intricacies of computing hardware. However, students will become acquainted with broad programming techniques and hardware concepts. The major has no mathematics requirements. Students who do have a particular interest in exploring the areas of programming and hardware should choose the subject 004478 Introduction to Information Technology as the first in their major or minor sequence.

This major provides good coverage of core economic principles, presented in
their social and political context. The treatment of the theory is relatively
non-mathematical, using graphical analysis rather than algebra or calculus. No
previous study of economics is required - an ability to write well is of more
use, making this the ideal economics major for inclusion in "Arts"
type degrees.
