Prizes

University Medals

University Medals are awarded to graduating students at undergraduate level on the basis of outstanding academic merit only. Recommendations are made by the Pro-Vice Chancellors of the Divisions to the Vice-Chancellor.

The Herbert Burton Medal
The Convocation (graduates of the University or of the former Canberra CAE) awards the Herbert Burton Medal annually to a final-year student who has completed an undergraduate degree course at the University of Canberra with academic merit and who has made a significant contribution as a student inside or outside the University community.

Chancellor’s Commendation
The Chancellor’s Commendation will be an ad hoc award made by the Chancellor to a graduating student who has not been awarded a University Medal or the Convocation’s Herbert Burton Medal. It is an award for achievement in spite of overwhelming difficulties or for achievement of a notable outcome worthy of recognition.

Division of Communication and Education

ACT Writers Centre Encouragement Award is awarded to a text with potential by a writer for young people in the Get Real Project.

The Apple/ANUTECH Prize for Desktop Publishing 1 is awarded annually to the best academic student enrolled in the subject Desktop Publishing 1.

The Australian Council for Educational Administration Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding final year Teacher Education student displaying leadership potential.

The Delta Technology Prize is awarded annually to the best student in Desktop Publishing 2.

The Nancy Lane Prize for academic excellence and professionalism is awarded annually to a student completing the undergraduate Library and Information Studies course.

The ACT Branch of the Australian Library and Information Association offers two annual prizes, one to the best student completing the undergraduate degree course Bachelor of Information Management in Library and Information Studies, and one to a student in the Graduate Diploma course in Library and Information Management, for the best academic performance overall.

The Allen and Unwin Prize for Prose Fiction is awarded annually to the best student undertaking the final semester fiction project in the Professional Writing specialisation of the Bachelor of Communication course.

The Allen and Unwin Prize for Writing for Young People is awarded annually for the best work in Writing for Young People in the Bachelor of Arts in Professional writing or the Graduate Diploma in Professional Communication.

The Australian Association of Special Education (ACT Chapter) Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding final year undergraduate student who has demonstrated best practice when teaching students with additional needs.

The Australian Federation of University Women (ACT) Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding female student completing the Bachelor of Education course.

The Bryan R Ward Foundation Prize for Tourism is awarded annually to the student completing the undergraduate degree course in Tourism for the best overall performance.

The Con Kiriloff Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in Chinese.

The Elsie Hope Solly Prize is awarded annually to the best female student who has completed the first year or equivalent of an undergraduate degree course for studies in the subjects Mathematics 1 and 2.

The Drake International Prize is awarded annually to the student with the best academic performance in the second year of the undergraduate Bachelor of Office Management course.

The Freeman New Media Prize is awarded to the best animation by new media students involved in the Get Real Project.

The Kodak (Australasia) Pty Ltd Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the area of Information and Records Management.

The Wizard Personnel and Office Services Pty Ltd Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student completing the subject Office Management 1/2.

The Gordon Burgoyne Memorial Prize for Journalism is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in Journalism for the year. The prize is restricted to persons 25 years or younger on January 1 of the year of the award.

The John Balnaves Prize is awarded annually to the student who completes the Graduate Diploma course in Library and Information Management or the undergraduate degree course in Library and Information Studies, with the most outstanding academic performance in Information Retrieval.

The Leanne Harvey Ford Award Prize is offered to a student for excellent achievement in the area of literature for young people.

The Public Relations Institute of Australia Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student who has majored in Public Relations in the Bachelor of Communication course.

The Records Management Association of Australia Prize (ACT) is awarded annually to the student with the most outstanding performance in formal studies in Information and Records Management.

The Sanchia Bolton Memorial Fund Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in Japanese Language and Culture who is enrolled in the second year of the undergraduate degree course in Modern Languages.

The Tourism Council Australia Prize is awarded annually to the best graduating student in the undergraduate degree course in Tourism.

The University Co-op Bookshop Prize is awarded to the Best Collaborative Work by a writer for young people in the Get Real Project.

The University Co-op Bookshop Prize is awarded to the Best Visual Text by a writer for young people in the Get Real Project.

The University Co-op Bookshop Prize is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in the undergraduate degree course in Communication, or to the postgraduate course in Professional Communication for the subject Freelance Writing.

The Tower Software Prize for Outstanding Performance is awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest result in Electronic Records Management.

The Tower Software Incentive Prize is awarded annually to the student who achieves the second highest result in the undergraduate subject Electronic Records Management.

The Accenture Prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest score in the final year subject Electronic Engineering project (005261)

The ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Prize for Criminal Law is awarded annually to the best student in Criminal Law who has obtained a High Distinction.

The Allen Allen & Hemsley Prize for Commercial Law is awarded annually to the best Commerce (Accounting)/Law double degree student as determined by Grade Point Average.

The Australian Computer Society Prize (Canberra Branch) is awarded annually to the most outstanding student enrolled in the subject Software Technology 1

The Australian Command Staff College Prize is awarded to the best student in the Master of Defence Studies.

The Bentleys MRI Chartered Accountants Prize is awarded annually to the top student in 004829 Accounting and Finance 3B

The Baker and McKenzie Commercial Law Prize is awarded to the most outstanding Commercial Law student as determined by the Head of School.

The Blake Dawson Waldron Prize for Equity is awarded annually to the best student based on overall assessment in the subject Equity.

The Blake Dawson Waldron Prize for Public Companies Law is awarded annually to the best student based on overall assessment in the subject Public Companies Law.

The CPA Australia First Year Prize is awarded annually to the best first year student in the undergraduate degree course in Accounting.

The CPA Australia Second Year Prize is awarded annually to the best second year student in the undergraduate degree course in Accounting.

The CPA Australia Undergraduate Prize is awarded annually to the best student completing a degree course with an accounting major acceptable for admission to CPA Australia.

The Freehills Prize for Business Administration/Law is awarded annually to the best Business Administration/Law student as determined by Grade Point Average.

The Freehills Prize for International Trade Law is awarded annually to the best student in the subject International Trade Law.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia Prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest marks in the subject 004838 Ethics, conditional that the student is not making a second attempt at the subject.

The Justice John Kelly Prize for Ethics and Leadership is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the final year subject Lawyers and Professional Responsibility.

The Malleson Stephen Jaques Prize for Banking and Finance/Law is awarded annually to the best graduating student in the Commerce (Banking & Finance)/Law double degree.

The Malleson Stephen Jaques Prize for Corporate Law is awarded annually to the best Masters in Corporate Law student as judged by the course convener.

The Meyer & Clapham Prize for Excellence in Client Interviewing is awarded annually to the best performance in client interviewing competition as judged by competition organisers.

The Minter Ellison First Year Law Prize is awarded annually to the best first year law student in the subjects Law 1 and Law 2.

The Minter Ellison Prize in Administrative Law is awarded annually to the best student in the subject Administrative Law.

The Minter Ellison Prize in Commercial Law is awarded annually to the best graduating Commerce (Accounting)/Law double degree student as determined by total Grade Point Average.

The Minter Ellison Prize in Litigation and Dispute Processing is awarded annually to the student with the best overall performance in the subject Litigation and Dispute Processing.

The Professional Careers Australia (ACT) Accounting, Banking and Finance/Law Prize is awarded annually to the best student in the Accounting, Banking and Finance/Law double degree.

The Professional Careers Australia Information Technology/Law Prize is awarded annually to the best student in the Information Technology/Law double degree.

The Statistical Society of Australia First Year Prize is be awarded annually to the student who obtains the best results in the subject Applied Statistics 1.

The Australian Institute of Physics (ACT Branch) Prize is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in the subjects Radio Communications and Optics and Photonics.

The Australian Institute of Management Consultants (ACT Chapter) Prize is awarded annually to the best student completing the subject Strategic Management M.

The Australian Human Resources Institute Prize is awarded annually to the student for excellence in the study of human resource management.

The Australian Institute of Banking and Finance Prize is awarded annually to the best graduating student in the Bachelor of Commerce in Banking and Finance course.

The Australian Institute of Management (ACT Chapter) Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding graduating student with the Bachelor of Management degree.

The Australian Local Government Association Prize is awarded annually to the best student in the subject Government at the Local Level.

The Australian Computer Society Prize (Canberra Branch) is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the subject Software Technology 1.

The Jennifer Cox Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the second year Engineering student who receives the best results in the subjects Electronic Engineering 2A and Computer Technology 2 or Electronic Engineering 2B.

The W E Sansum Medal Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding graduate in the fourth year of the undergraduate degree course in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

The Economic Society Prize is awarded annually to the best student completing the undergraduate degree course in Applied Economics.

The Elsie Hope Solly Prize is offered to an outstanding student female student who has completed the first year or equivalent of an undergraduate degree course for studies in the subjects Mathematics 1 and 2.

The Aspect Computing Pty Ltd Prize is awarded annually to the best group of students completing the subject Computing Project.

The Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Prize is awarded annually to the student completing the undergraduate degree course in Accounting, who achieves first place in the subject Advanced Auditing.

The Ernst and Young Prize is awarded annually to the student with the best result in the subject Financial Management 2.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize is awarded annually to the best student in the subject Accounting and Finance 3A.

The Professional Careers Australia (ACT) Prize is awarded annually to the best student completing the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.

The Gaye Forrester Public Sector Accounting Prize is awarded annually to the best female student completing the undergraduate degree course in Accounting who is acceptable for admission to the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants (ASCPA).

The Gordon Aitchison Prize is offered annually to the student with the best overall results in the subjects Engineering Physics 1A and Electronic Engineering 1.

The Institute of Public Administration Australia (ACT Division) Prize for Public Sector Management is awarded annually to the best student in the subject Public Sector Management.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers Prize is awarded annually to the student who achieves the best overall result in the third year subjects, Signals and Telecommunications and Instrumentation and Control.

The Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Prize is awarded to the student or student group judged to have produced the best poster presentation at the Annual Poster Session held as part of the subjects Electronic Engineering Project and Computer Engineering Project.

The National Tertiary Education Union Prize is awarded annually to the best undergraduate student in the subject Gender and Organisations.

The Mirion Y Bearman Prize is awarded annually to the graduating Bachelor of Information Technology student who achieves the best overall grades in individually assessed final year subjects.

The Statistical Society of Australia (Canberra Branch) Prize is awarded annually to the student completing an undergraduate course who obtains the best results in third year Statistics subjects.

The Zonta Club (Canberra) Prize is awarded annually to the best female student in the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering course

Division of Science and Design

The Parks and Leisure Australia Prize for Conservation and Land Management Studies is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the final year Conservation and Land Management Studies.

The Australian Society for Microbiology (ACT Branch) Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in Microbiology.

The National Trust of Australia (ACT) Prize is awarded annually to the best final year student in the Cultural Heritage Studies specialisation in the undergraduate degree course in Applied Science.

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in level 5/6 Chemistry.

The Margaret Guy Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student who has completed the undergraduate course in Nursing.

The Royal Australian Institute of Architects John Redmond Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the first tier of the Architecture course.

The Royal Australian Institute of Architects Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the second tier of the Architecture course.

The Mapping Sciences Institute of Australia Prize (ACT Division) is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in the subject Geographic Information Systems for outstanding achievement in cartographic excellence.

The ACT Housing Prize is awarded annually to the outstanding student for a project in all areas associated with adaptable housing.

The Alethea Sandow Medal and Prize in Materials Conservation is awarded annually to the outstanding student who has contributed most during the year in the field of Conservation of Cultural Materials.

The Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student in the undergraduate degree course in Cultural Heritage Studies.

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (ACT Group) Prize is awarded to a final year student for outstanding performance in the Landscape Architecture course.

The Australian Institute of Sport Prize is awarded annually to the best final year student in the course leading to the award of Bachelor of Applied Science in Sports Studies, and who has made a significant contribution to sport in the community.

The Australian Psychological Society Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding student completing the Honours course in Psychology.

The Carole Lomas Award for Design Development Prizes are awarded annually to a second year student and to a third year student who have demonstrated the greatest improvement and growth in their design ability over that year.

The Ergonomics Society of Australia (ACT Branch) Prize is awarded annually to a final year Industrial Design student who has achieved the highest standard with regards to ergonomics in their major project.

The Eric Best Memorial Medal Prize is awarded annually to the student with the best overall performance at undergraduate level in Resource and Environmental Science.

The Glass Connection Prize is awarded annually to the best student in the field of Conservation of Stained Glass.

The Geological Society of Australia Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding second-year Geology student.

The Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (NSW Branch) Prize is awarded annually to the student demonstrating general excellence in the Bachelor of Applied Science degree specialising in Medical Laboratory Science.

The Roger Johnson Prize in Environmental Design is awarded annually to the best student’s performance in an annual one or two day Bachelor Degree course cross-discipline project.

The Royal College of Nursing High Achiever Award Prize is awarded annually to the graduating student with the best overall academic result in the pre-registration undergraduate degree course in Nursing.

The Wide World of Sports (TCN Channel 9 Pty Ltd) Prize is awarded annually to the best graduating student in the Sports Studies (Journalism) Course.

The Australian Graphic Association Prize is awarded annually to the best graduating Graphic Design student with the highest grade point average (or highest Honours level).

The Environment Institute of Australia Prize for Resource and Environmental Science is awarded to the best graduating student completing one of the Bachelor of Applied Science degrees or related double degrees in the Rosource and Environmental Science field.

The F O Watts Prize is awarded to the student completing Construction Management and Economics who has obtained the highest mark in Construction Management.

The National Capital Authority Prize is awarded to a student who has shown meritorious performance in design as well as clearly demonstrated commitment to the community.

The Robwin and Sons Prize in Building Economics is awarded to the best student in Building Economics.
