A message from Jon Stanhope, Chief Minister
Received 31st July 2008
As the University of Canberra turns 40 it’s time to reflect on the important contribution it has made to Canberra and to the lives of countless Canberrans over four decades. And it’s also a time to look to the future.
Because education is so critical, not only for a strong skilled economy but also for a tolerant and innovative society, UC has made an incalculable contribution to the ACT.
Starting life as the Canberra College of Advanced Education, the institution has always offered world-class skills training and education. By educating students from the ACT and around Australia and more recently from around the globe, UC has been a great ambassador for Canberra and a provider of skills to individuals and ACT businesses.
At a time when the ACT is dealing with the local impacts of the national skills shortage it’s particularly pleasing to see that UC continues to be at the forefront of professional education in Australia. UC also partners with the Canberra Institute of Technology in a nationally-recognised model offering both vocational training and university education to students.
Thanks to the work of local institutions like UC, our city boasts the highest educated population in Australia. But to stay out in front the ACT must continue to innovate and provide world-class education and research through our tertiary education sector including UC.
The ACT Government is committed to supporting UC and in this year’s budget announced a funding package of more than $2 million. This will help fund a number of initiatives including the establishment of the Donald Horne Institute for research and teaching in cultural heritage, and new programs in water management and urban planning.
A new Australia and New Zealand School of Government Chair at the University will receive $800,000 over four years, boosting UC’s existing research and teaching strengths in public administration.
Last year UC opened a new $10 million allied health building funded by the ACT Government. This state-of-the-art facility houses education, research and clinical practice in disciplines including physiotherapy, pharmacy, nutrition and dietetics and psychology.
For 40 years UC has made an important contribution to the ACT and under the stewardship of Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker is forging a bright future.
My government will continue to support UC as it moves forward to its next 40 years.
