The discipline is unique in blending together:
- The "green" and the "brown" - conservation & management of wildlife, landscapes & catchments, with environmental chemistry, water quality management & land rehabilitation
- Natural and cultural heritage - biodiversity, wildlife, rivers, parks & reserves, with cultural objects, collections, sites & landscapes
- Field and laboratory experience - field classes and study sites, professional placement, and work on valuable materials, with laboratory analysis & simulation
- Theory and application - basic earth science, biology, ecology, chemistry and related disciplines, with field classes, workplace experience, work on current issues & real-world problem-solving
- Advanced and appropriate technologies -chemical & statistical analysis, geographic information systems, databases & multimedia, with community involvement, community-based management, Aboriginal studies, cultural awareness, environmental education and heritage interpretation
- Science with management -ensuring that relevant science informs resource, environmental and heritage management decisions effectively
Environmental Science is a centre of applied research, containing the Institute for Applied Ecology and the UC nodes of the Cooperative Research Centres for eWater and for Invasive Animals.
Staff of Environmental Science have been in the forefront of developments in teaching excellence, and in web-based and other flexible delivery strategies. School staff members also have a high service profile within the University, the professions, the community, advice to government and links with industry.
