Qualifications
Mr Gilchrist holds Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from Monash University and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Canberra. He is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the ACT and of the High Court of Australia and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and has been a consultant to a major Australian commercial law firm for over 8 years. He is a member of the Copyright Working Party and the Working Party on Intellectual Property.
Past Professional & Teaching Experience
Mr Gilchrist was seconded as an Associate to CELTS for Semester 2, 1996 to develop a coherent program of skills teaching throughout the LLB curriculum. The outcomes of this work have been progressively implemented in the Faculty of Law. He has also been a member of successive Curriculum Review Committees for the Faculty over the last 6 years. In 2001 he was appointed a Fellow of CELTS. In 2005 he was appointed Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee of the Faculty.
In May 2001 Mr Gilchrist was the Medico-Legal Foundation Lecturer and honorary Professor at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Congress in held in Canberra. In December 2003 Mr Gilchrist was appointed by the Australian Attorney-General as a member of the Copyright Law Review Committee. That Committee reported on its reference on Crown Copyright in March 2005. In July 2006 Mr Gilchrist delivered a paper to the inaugural Sino-Australian Law Deans Conference in Beijing, entitled Internationalisation of the Curriculum: Higher Degrees.
Mr Gilchrist has over 14 years of professional experience in commercial legal practice including the development and negotiation of international governmental agreements on the use of satellite services, the drafting of international aircraft and shipbuilding tenders and the negotiation and drafting of major aircraft, shipbuilding, and marine insurance contracts. He has also advised on one of the largest information technology contracts, and on one of the largest defence contracts, in Australian history.
Teaching
Mr Gilchrist joined the University full-time at the commencement of the LLB program and developed Advanced Legal Research and Writing and Law of Obligations as part of this program. He has also developed four postgraduate law subjects. He normally teaches in the subjects of Legal Theory, Advanced Legal Research and Writing, Law of Obligations, Government and Corporate Contracting and Intellectual Property Law. He has also taught Human Rights, Administrative Law and the Law of Communications.
Mr Gilchrist was Convener of the Master of Laws, Master of Legal Studies and Master of International Economic Law degrees until September 2006 and has over the last 6 years developed and negotiated international arrangements for collaborative postgraduate Masters degree programs in law.

Mr Gilchrist is the author of numerous articles and papers on intellectual property, information technology and government contracting topics.
