1. Why Study the JD at the University of Canberra?
There are at least five good reasons to take this degree:
- It is accredited for Legal Practice in Australia
- The majority of the classes are on selected evenings and/or on Saturdays
- Small groups teaching
- All the units are taught by academics and industry practitioners
- The course can be completed in 6 semesters (max. 12 if part-time) or only 5 semesters if you choose to fast track your degree with the Winter Term offerings.
2. Professional Recognition
The JD course is fully accredited by the Supreme Court of the ACT and leads to admission to legal practice throughout Australia under the reciprocal recognition scheme. If you wish to practise law in Australia, a separate course of Practical Legal Training [PLT] is required after graduating with the JD award. 3. Career Opportunities
The JD is perfect if you are looking for a career change or to gain formal qualifications in Law. It is ideal for working professionals in the public sector or private business, and provides an avenue towards a legal qualification with the status of a Master's degree.
4. Admission Requirements
A good (usually at least a credit average) degree in any discipline and/ or a graduate diploma in legal studies and normally significant employment experience (two years minimum). Selection criteria include: quality of academic record, interpersonal and communication skills as ascertained by interview, reasons for seeking admission, maturity, motivation and experience/achievements since graduation. Students who have successfully completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies will be favourably considered.
5. Duration of the Course
The course is 72 credit points worth and can be completed in 3 years if four units are successfully completed per semester. If units are also taken in the Winter Term, the duration of the degree can be reduced to 2.5 years.
6. Convenient Timetable
You don't have to give up work to study a JD degree. The majority of the classes are scheduled on selected evenings and/or on Saturdays. To find out the timetabling of your units, please check the timetabling website.

9. A Degree with Honours
Student who are enrolled in the Juris Doctor degree and during their law studies, have achieved at least a credit average in all law units undertaken at the University of Canberra can apply to do the JD with Honours. Indeed, the degree of Juris Doctor may be awarded with first or second class honours. Following submission of a dissertation as part of the unit Juris Doctor Dissertation, students must obtain at least a classification of Good Performance for that dissertation.
10. Winter Term Option
Students can choose to study additional units in the Winter Term or to have this period as time away
from study. The Winter Term provides a valuable opportunity for work-integrated learning, and intensive learning. Students should be able to complete the academic requirements of their courses at a faster rate and enter the workforce sooner than their peers.
