Congratulations to  Dr Patricia Easteal for her honours in the Australia Day Awards 2010.

Dr Easteal has received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the community, education and the law through promoting awareness and understanding of violence against women, discrimination and access to justice for minority groups.

PhD scholarship in Law 2010

A PhD scholarship in law to the value of $25,000 per annum plus relocation and thesis allowances is available for applicants wishing to commence study in semester 1, 2010.

This scholarship is available for domestic applicants who are not currently enrolled in a PhD at the University of Canberra.

Closing date for applications: 29 January 2009 (please allow us time to process applications during our extremely intense period beginning in November to mid February).

Faculty of Law Mission Statement

Through our scholarship, research and teaching, the University of Canberra seeks to offer the highest standard of professional legal education. The University of Canberra Faculty of Law strives to be one of the leading Law Schools in Australia, especially in the area of commercial law. it also aims to be distinctive in its commitment to both legal research and the importance of teaching by providing its students with academic, extracurricular and other resources that will permit them to attain the highest possible level of achievement in legal education and prepare them for positions of leadership and service across many areas of legal practice, business, government and community work.

As Australia enters the Information Age and develops its Knowledge Economy the role and importance of commercial skills is vital. A legal and regulatory framework conducive to and supportive of such developments is a vital part of the required infrastructure if Australia is to be successful in this transformation. Also required are legal professionals who have the commercial skills and creativity to shape and construct the legal architecture for this new environment. Moreover, all professionals will need the legal literacy to manage risks and the commercialization skills to achieve organizational goals. The Faculty of Law at the University of Canberra, through its teaching, research and community service plays an important role in meeting these important societal and professional needs.
