Key Work 4 - Informatics practice involves the application of informatics theory, technique and technologies over a wide range of human activities (including e-commerce, health informatics, educational informatics, etc). One human activity system, 'research', has had little systematic attention. e-Research has been developing as an application of information technology to research, but this paper argues that an information systems approach is required if coherent, sustained change is to be made to the system in which research is conducted. A research program is underway to test the ideas.

Key Work 1 - Popper's 3 worlds, modelled after Plato's Cave Analogy, turns out to be a powerful Informatics theory. It provides a unifying account of the diversity of informatics disciplines in a way that allows for integration and coherence at both the disciplinary and practice levels. This paper formulates the theory in informatics terms and demonstrates its efficacy. The paper has been used extensively in education and underlies current research in virtuality.

Key Work 3 - Ethical action is a key aspect of information systems because the implementation of these systems makes a dramatic change to the working lives of people. The issue is addressed squarely in this paper which presents a method of embedding ethics in practice and in the technologies which support practice. The method, supported by software, is used effectively in the education of information professionals.

Key Work 5 - The discipline takes the role and articulation of theory seriously. This presentation critiqued the hard-line approach being taken by many discipline leaders and proposed an alternative view. This issue is now near the top of my research agenda.
