ISE researchers win best paper award at ACIS 2011 - 1 December, 2011.
A research paper by ISE’s Prof John Campbell and Adjunct A/Prof Stephen Moore (co-written with A/Prof Carla Wilkin, Monash University) has won best paper at the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (www.acis2011.org). The paper examined the comprehensiveness of ISO/IEC 38500:2008 Corporate Governance of IT standard in an inter-organisational public/private sector context. The Australasian Conference on Information Systems is the premier conference in Australasia for Information Systems academics and covers technical, organisational, business, and social issues in the application of Information Technology.
Researchers from the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering win ARC Discovery Project funding - 2 November 2011
Two prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) grants worth more than $500,000 dollars have been awarded to researchers in the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering.
Dr Sergey Sergeev leads a project investigating complex mathematics with the potential to unlock the mysteries of the quantum realm. The Moscow-born mathematician and his research team will be able to deepen our understanding of cross-relations between geometry and integrable systems. Dr Sergeev and his team were awarded $315,000 in ARC Discovery funding to develop advanced mathematical methods to analyse a large set of classical integrable systems.
“We believe that elementary quantum particles – such as the electron, proton and neutron—are solutions to quantum equations,” Dr Sergeev said. “Unfortunately, we don’t know these equations and this research is an attempt to find out what they are.”
“This grant will help us expand our research capacity and continue investigating fundamental mathematics.”
Professor John Campbell, associate dean of research in the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, received $210,000 to lead a project entitled Productivity and work-life balance in technology-enabled virtual work environments. This ARC Discovery grant project will help develop understanding about the impact of technology on work-life balance.
Professor Campbell said at times, professionals could find that their work and home lives were in conflict – with work interrupting family time or personal responsibilities disrupting the working day.
“Sometimes the very technologies designed to improve our work-life balance can do exactly the opposite,” Professor Campbell said. “This project is about finding ways to ensure technology is a help and not a hindrance in maintaining a healthy balance.”
Professor Campbell and his team will develop guidelines to improve organisational and individual outcomes for professional knowledge workers who use technology extensively in their interactions with others.
ID Breakthrough at UC (28 August 2011)
Identifying a criminal by the way they walk is now within grasp, thanks to technology developed by University of Canberra HDR student Emdad Hossain. Mr Hossain has devised a system that fuses facial recognition technology and analysis of gait.

After the success of last year's inaugural competition, the 3 Minute Thesis is on again.
This is an excellent opportunity for Higher Degree by Research Candidates to develop their communication skills by addressing a non-specialist audience on the significance of their thesis for 3 minutes. Generous cash prizes to support your research are up for grabs and our winner will represent UC at this year’s national final in Perth during September.

Teleworking: a better way of working?
Teleworking working from home or outside the traditional office or workplace, using the latest computing, telephony and digital devices is now hugely popular. It can often lead to a better work-life balance for employees and cost savings for businesses.
But how does it impact productivity? How do you manage someone who isnt necessarily always at their desk? How does it affect office politics, self-esteem and inter-personal relationships when someone regularly works outside the office?
